Northumberland Coast and Castles

Routes offered on this trail

The Northumberland Coast and Castles path follows the stunningly beautiful and picturesque coastline officially starting in Cresswell in the south and finishing in Berwick-on-tweed in the North.  Providing a variety of terrain over sandy beaches, rocky headland and the chance to visit impressive castles as well as the famous Holy Island (Lindisfarne).  Our walks start from Warkworth and continue through to Berwick-upon-Tweed or there are short break options available.

Taking a rest day to explore the biblical Holy Island of Lindisfarne is recommended and also helps with planning crossing the Causeway to and from the island, giving more flexibility with tide times.

This trail is considered to be moderate. Recommended for all types of walkers.

We offer a variety of itineraries for this walk over a selection of walking days, so you are bound to find an option which suits you. Itineraries can also be tweaked or made more bespoke to suit your needs.

Rest Days, explore or relax it's your choice.

A rest day is a great way to break up your walking Holiday.  You could explore the area or just take it easy for the day.

A fabulous way to make your holiday more bespoke.

We give you some ideas below on choice places to stop for that extra day.

Warkworth

Taking an extra day at the beginning of your holiday will allow you more time to explore the ancient village of Warkworth.  With a very well-preserved medieval Castle and a fascinating Hermitage Chapel built in the 14th Century, the Chapel is carved out of the rock and only accessible via a small boat.  On a stroll through Warkworth village you will find craft shops, cafes and pubs along the main street.

Holy Island (Lindisfarne)

Taking an extra day to explore the Island of Lindisfarne comes highly recommended- rather than trying to beat the tide times. There is plenty to explore on the island, including a Castle, Priory and church. The Museum of Island Life is housed in an 18th century fisherman’s cottage and St Aidans Winery is where you can sample the famous Lindisfarne Mead.

Seahouses

At about your half way point along the Northumberland Coast path is Seahouses, a colourful, large, fishing village.  With beautiful beaches and an impressive range of boutiques, restaurants, bars, coffee houses, ice cream parlours and fish and chip shops.  Perfectly located to take a boat trip out to explore the Farne Islands.  A must visit for any nature lovers , home to a large colony of grey seals and puffins and an immense number of seabirds, making this the most famous sea bird sanctuary in the British Isles.

Berwick-upon-Tweed

You could add an additional day to the end of your holiday to explore Berwick-upon-Tweed.  This seaside town has plenty to offer, steeped in history with many buildings of interest throughout the town including the 18th century Town Hall which retains its original jailhouse, and also houses the Cell Block Museum.  The border town still retains it’s well-preserved Elizabethan Town Walls and is home to Berwick-upon-Tweed Barracks and Main Guard.  If you are looking to relax, there are plenty of independent shops, boutiques, antique shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes as well as a Wine & Spirit Museum, and a Victorian Chemist & Pottery Shop
